Sherry then………  and Sherry now….

This blog is my attempt to chronicle my Peace Corps experience….from start to finish. I’m going to attempt to include everything from the application process to my return home from Africa.  This blog is also an attempt to help family and friends stay in contact and informed of my Peace Corps adventure.

Some info about me…my name is Sherry and I’m a proud Kentucky native.  I graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology. I also minored in Folklore and Social Work.  I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations while at WKU, to include: AmeriCorps (www.americorps.org), BRASS (Barren River Area Safe Space: www.kdva.org/brass/brass.html), and The Clothesline Project (www.clotheslineproject.org). My service with AmeriCorps was spent working with at-risk youth in Bowling Green, KY. After graduating from college, I continued working with youth as a counselor at a residential facility for at-risk teenage girls.

I became interested in serving in the Peace Corps while in college. However, I didn’t start actively contemplating serving with the Peace Corps until recently. After extensive research, I finally embarked on a journey to join the PC around Sept 2007.

I’ve accepted my invitation to serve in South Africa as a Resource Specialist.  As a resource specialist, my primary duties will be in computer literacy, and the integration of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) skills into the classroom.  I will be working with teachers, school directors, students and/or community members on ICT related programming.

My PC staging is scheduled for July 12-14. Staging will occur at a major city in the US (usually DC, NY or Philadelphia for training classes that are departing to Africa, but can vary depending on flight availability).  My Pre-Service Training (PST) will be held in South Africa from July 15-September 11.  My formal Peace Corps Volunteer service will begin on September 12, 2008 and end on September 12, 2010.  I’ll be in the 18th PC group to serve in South Africa.

  1. Hi there! I came across your blog while searching for Marapyane, SA. The reason I know about it is that my brother, AJ Collins, is also there for the PC. He is there with his wife Liz Chandler. Just curious if you know them!

Today, 8/20, is his birthday. It would blow his mind if you do know him and wished him a happy b-day! :-)

We’ve only heard from him a few times since their arrival, but they seem happy. I hope your experience thus far has been great too.

    Take Care,

    Howard

  2. Hi Sherry:

I spent 2 great years in Marapyane ‘04 – ‘06 and I’m hoping to go there next year. I lived at the college and rode my bike daily into the village. Let me know if I can give you some insight into your service. Thanks

    Roger
